What is Area 51?
Area 51 is an a.n.o.n.i.m.y.z.i.n.g. s.e.r.v.e.r. How many times have you worried of your privacy? How many times have you wished your IP doesn't get logged at the server you visit? When you acces a website through Area 51, your IP address and such sensitive information is never let out to the site you visit, thus keeping you completely anonimous to the server. Area 51 downloads the page/resource you request to our server and then serves them to your browser. This way the server you visit gets our IP address and not yours. To them you are anonimous and we are the visitor.

What is a P.r.o.x.y. S.e.r.v.e.r?
A p.r.o.x.y. s.e.r.v.e.r is a software that can be used to control the internet traffic. It can be used in various scenarios:
- To share an internet connection.
- To restrict/block access to certain websites based on keywords appearing in:
- the IP/URL (address) of the resource being accessed.
- the content of the resource being accessed.

How is Area 51 different from a p.r.o.x.y. s.e.r.v.e.r?
Area 51 is
NOT INTENTED to work as an online p.r.o.x.y s.e.r.v.e.r or to bypass other p.r.o.x.y s.e.r.v.e.r.s.
You may not use Area 51 to bypass any blocking servers. Area 51 is designed striclty to enable you to hide your IP address from the server you visit. Any users who use Area 51 for purposes other than to hide your IP address will be banned and their IP blocked.

How do I know whether I am on a p.r.o.x.y based connection?
You are on a proxy based connection if when you access certain pages you see a message that the the page has been blocked or p.r.o.x.i.e.d.
If you are using internet from your college, school or office chances are that your connection to the internet is p.r.o.x.i.e.d.

Why can't I access some pages even when I use Area 51?
This could happen due to various reasons. However you may try using the various options we have provided in the Area 51 homepage - like disabling JavaScript, images, stripping titles & striping meta data. Still if you can't access some pages it might be mostly because our voding has some problem with it. However, if you come across web pages that can't be accessed even through Area 51, please
let us know so that we can improve our system.

Who can use Area 51?
For the time being Area 51 is under closed beta. Also we are running on a low bandwidth server. So only some of my friends and very few other people are allowed to access and make use of Area 51. We are looking forward for funds/donations which could help us get more bandwidth. Once we have enough bandwidth and funds Area 51 will be open to all. You can help us raise funds by
donating some amount (
even $3 or $5 is a donation).

What kind of web resources can I access using Area 51?
Area 51 is designed in such a way as to access any kind of web resources. However, you may not use Area 51 to download files larger than 1 mb. This restriction is set so that we do not run out of bandwidth and do not use much of the cpu (but yes, our code is smooth and uses the least cpu / system resources).

Can I peek at it's source code?
No,
Area 51 is not open source; I'd like to hide my bugs :)

I badly wish to access this service. How do I get an account?
Area 51 is currently in closed beta
testing. But you may submit your
request for an account. As and when we are ready to provide more accounts we shall let you know (provided you have requested for an account).

Are there any limits?
Yes, to avoid exhausting bandwidth, each user is given only 1Mb data transfer per month (during this beta period)or until we get some
supporters. Please note that this bandwidth is double the size of the page you download. This is because the data downloaded to our server also counts. For example, when you visit a 1Kb website through Area 51 you actually are using 2Kb of data (1Kb of data downloaded to our server and 1Kb of data
send to your browser).

How do I block access to Area 51?
Before you take a decision to block please read the topic "Why do you provide this service?" which may make you revice your decision.
If you still wish to block your network from accessing Area 51 do EITHER ONE of the following:
- visit this page from the IP to be blocked to block a single IP (only if the IP is static).
- visit this page to block a series of IP (ISPs use this).
- block the URL http://area51.glibix.com.
Please
do not block this IP as this is a shared server and contains informative websites hosted on the same. Also
do not block the root host (http://glibix.com) as the root website doesn't provide this anonimizing service.
Please note that even if the IP address is blocked users can access the Area 51 website BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE AREA 51 TO BROWSE OTHER WEBSITES.

Why do you provide this service?
All of us concerned about our privacy. You may not wish an unknown party (for example: a web server) to know your IP address and other such sensitive information. So there is always a need for anonimity in the INTERNET. As social networking sites and internet based crimes are increasing, people using the internet (especially parents) are concerned about their (or their chid's) privacy online. So we consider Area 51 as a very important service.
